Youth suicide prevention
The Queensland Government Suicide Prevention Strategy 2003-2008 adopts a whole-of-life suicide prevention framework that identifies young people as a priority population group. In 2005-2006 and 2006-07, the department has contributed to the strategy by:
- organising the Queensland Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention Conference 2006: Sharing learnings from practice and research held 30-31 March 2006 in Brisbane
- consulting with identified service providers about effective suicide and self-harm prevention strategies targeting young refugees and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people in Queensland
- continuing to fund Gallang Place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation to deliver the Brisbane-based Indigenous Youth Suicide Prevention Program.
- funding the Royal Flying Doctor Service to deliver the Cape York Youth Initiatives Program in Aurukun, Coen, Kowanyama, Lockhart River and Pormpuraaw
- contracting the Department of Psychiatry, The University of Queensland, to develop a training CD Rom for service providers in Queensland about understanding and responding to youth self-harm
- commencing development of resources which promote good practice in suicide and self-harm prevention.
