Preventing abuse

Most people want to love and care for their children, but parents can harm their children when stress, tiredness, lack of skills, information or support combine to make the pressures of caring for them overwhelming.

Understanding the behaviour of parents and the possible triggers does not justify harm to a child or young person. Parents are responsible for the care of their children and need to recognise when they need help before harm occurs.

Early identification and appropriate responses and support for children and families can prevent the escalation of matters and the need for statutory intervention with families.

  • Protecting children from harm

Every child and young person has the right to grow up in a safe and supportive family and to have opportunities that assist them to reach their full potential.

  • Prevention and early intervention

The department works with the community and other agencies to promote prevention and early intervention services for children and young people.
