DFV electronic monitoring

The Queensland Government is committed to enhancing the safety of victim-survivors of domestic and family violence (DFV).

As part of these efforts, a DFV Electronic Monitoring Pilot will run over 2 years in 2 specific locations in Queensland: Townsville and Caboolture.

From 1 October 2025, Magistrates Courts in these locations will have the power to impose a monitoring device condition on a Domestic Violence Order (DVO)  for eligible high-risk individuals.

How the pilot works

The pilot is designed to:

  • empower victim-survivors to make informed safety decisions and enact their comprehensive safety plans
  • increase accountability of persons using violence and compliance with DVOs
  • support police to respond to potential DVO breaches.

Under the pilot, persons using violence will be fitted with an electronic monitoring device, worn on their ankle. This GPS-enabled device will monitor their location to ensure compliance with DVO conditions.

Victim-survivors will have the choice to use a safety device and will be offered support from DFV services, including tailored safety planning.

When deciding to impose electronic monitoring conditions, courts will consider a range of issues, including the views and wishes of the victim-survivor.
