National approach to child protection

The National Framework for Protecting Australia's Children 2021–2031, titled ‘Safe and Supported,’ is a joint effort by governments, non-government organisations, and communities. It aims to reduce child abuse, neglect, and their intergenerational impacts over ten years. The framework focuses on vulnerable groups, and aligns with other national initiatives supporting systemic change including the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children, National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021–2030 and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Early Childhood Strategy. Two 5-year action plans outline strategies, outcomes, and monitoring mechanisms, to ensure children grow up safe, supported, and free from harm.

The National Framework vision – Children and young people in Australia reach their full potential by growing up safe and supported, free from harm and neglect.

The National Framework goal – To make significant and sustained progress in reducing the rates of child abuse and neglect and its intergenerational impacts.

The National Framework priority groups

  • children and families with multiple and complex needs
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people experiencing disadvantage or who are vulnerable
  • children and young people with disability or parents/carers with disability experiencing disadvantage or who are vulnerable
  • children and young people who have experienced abuse or neglect, including those in out-of-home care or leaving care.
