Inquiry into elder abuse in Queensland

The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring the safety, dignity and wellbeing of older Queenslanders and recognises the importance of addressing the abuse of older people.

On 10 December 2024, the Queensland Government established the Inquiry into Elder abuse in Queensland (the Inquiry) as a priority commitment under the first 100 Day Plan. Led by the Education, Arts and Communities Committee (the Committee), the Inquiry heard from 124 witnesses across the state and received over 120 submissions.

The Committee tabled its report on 12 December 2025 and made 16 recommendations aligned with key themes raised throughout the Inquiry:

  • advocating for consistent and collective national reform
  • strengthening support and services for victims
  • age-friendly and inclusive communities
  • addressing the misuse of enduring power of attorney legislation
  • introducing adult safeguarding for adults with care and support needs who are unable to protect themselves from abuse or neglect.

On 12 March 2026, the Queensland Government tabled its response to the Committee's report, reaffirming its commitment to protecting older people in Queensland from harm and restoring community safety.
