Forensic Disability Service

The Forensic Disability Service (FDS) is a purpose built, medium security facility located at Wacol. The service cares for and supports adults with an intellectual disability or cognitive impairment who have been detained to the service on forensic orders (disability).

The service is operated by the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety. The Administrator of the service is appointed by the Director of Forensic Disability under the Forensic Disability Act 2011 (the act) and is also responsible for the detention of the clients and day-to-day operation of the service. The staff at the FDS undertake the operational tasks of transitioning clients through the programs and rehabilitation services provided at the FDS with the goal of enabling clients to be able to safely return to their communities with an enhanced quality of life.

Although separate and distinct to the FDS, the Director of Forensic Disability has functions under the Act which include, but are not limited, to:

• protecting the rights of FDS clients under the Act,
• issuing policies and procedures about the detention, care and support and protection of FDS clients,
• facilitating the proper and efficient administration of the Act, and
• undertaking monitoring and auditing of the FDS compliance with the Act.

The Director of Forensic Disability liaises closely with FDS staff when deciding upon the admission and exit of clients to and from the FDS.
